M is for Mrs. Big Daddy Long Legs

This past weekend, Saturday March 5th to be specific, my wonderful maids-of-honor hosted a bridal shower for yours truly at the Rec Center in the neighborhood I grew up in.  My Mom and Mrs. Coleman were kind enough to assist with all of the preparation and decorating.  I can't think of a better one word summation for the day than blessed. (Prepare yourself for another outburst of sap.)

At each juncture of this marital journey I've felt incredibly humbled by the people in my life.  I am overwhelmingly in awe of the fact that so many people have gone out of their way for both Ryan and I from the very start of all of this.  From a last minute ring swap so that Ryan didn't propose ring-less to secret meetings at the Chocolate Bar (although I don't think either of you regrets those dates, Jen & Julie).  From secretly having life size cardboard cut outs made to making sure that the most special moment of my life was captured on film (and ducking even though there was no way I would see you anyway Mom).  From indulging my crazy and trying on bridesmaid dresses a full 10 months before the wedding to cross-country flights and long road trips to avoid missing any moment of celebration.  The amount of effort, time and care that has gone into all of the events that have already taken place (our engagement celebration, our negative one year annivesary celebration and the shower) and all that are coming up (the bachelorette party and the big shindig) truly sheds a new light on the term heart-warming.  I think it's a true testament to the kindness and character that I've been fortunate enough to be surrounded by.  To each of you reading this (and those that don't), who've sacrificed one moment of your time helping make my engagement period special- thank you.  That is truly what little girls dream of and I've been way more fortunate than I deserve.  So thank you.  (P.S. To those of you who witnessed my blubbering at the shower, this is really what my speech should have said.)

Anywho- so back to the shower.  It was fantastic.  Jen and Julie planned the details to perfection.  They planned a Martin word scramble.  In case you were ever curious, decoding "sheen" and "short" from scrambled letters is FAR more intuitive than "luther king jr."  They were also brave enough to let a room dominated by accountants try and estimate how many M&M's were in a bowl (do you see what they did there?)  Lastly, they treated everyone to a game where I had to guess Ryan's answers to questions.  Anyone who knows Ryan knows that asking his answers to questions to be read aloud is risky business.  I'm sure that his mother and aunt were particularly proud to learn that his stripper name of choice would be Big Daddy Long legs and that he pinpointed his oldest pair of underwear as approximately 10 years old.  We'll go ahead and attribute that to his sentimentality as opposed to his laziness and fear of spending money.  Tina Fey, you don't know what you are missing.

Of course, I was showered with way too many of my favorite registry items.  Ryan and I can now successfully make soup.  You can come over and actually sit at the island (rather than our super classy card/kitchen table).  You can enjoy some fondue or I can make you some cupcakes.  I can serve you wine out of some wine glasses (so you won't realize that my first few cupcake ventures may not be amazing).  You can have a FRESHLY GROUND cup of coffee.  You can eat off of some non-SOLO plates.  I can measure things.  You can admire our new vases or maybe some candlesticks.  Basically we can FINALLY have people over**.  I am so excited!

Thank you all again- to everyone that planned, everyone that came, and everyone that was just there in spirit.  There really aren't words to accurately express how much it all means to me, so thank you.

** I would still make sure I'm there if you plan to drop by.  When I'm not Ryan may still be sitting on the couch in his underwear.  His 10 year old underwear, no less.  :c)

Julie used to throw frogs against the walls of this rec center when we were little.  Ohhh, memories.

M is for mmmmmm.  Or Martin.  It's really in the eye of the beholder.

Ryan's dinner for the last week.

Delicious punch in the making

Notice my furrowed brow and intensive thought pose.  Clearly I was determining what fast food restaurant Ryan would pick to eat at for the rest of his life.

Oh hey.

Tiffany is good at wrapping presents.

Inspiration to learn to cook.

I need to learn to use these...

...but I'm much better at these.  :c)

Nuptial News: Installment Nine

Writing "Installment Nine" gave me butterflies in my stomach.  Somehow it simultaneously feels like I've been engaged for 5 years and yet ALLLLL the time I had for planning is evaporating.  Oh time- you silly minx.  So, can't say I'm uber proud of the quantity of items I've accomplished this month but I got a LOT done last month so it's okay, right?

Things Accomplished:
  • Set up my dress alteration appointment
  • Set up my make up/hair trial
  • Ordered my garter
  • Figured out how I want to wear my hair (I think)
  • Figured out what style of veil I like (I think)
  • Invitation design re-fining

Things in the Pipeline:
  • Veil
  • Invitations
  • Escort Cards

Ryan's Contributions:
Hurry up July.  :c)

Gimme some Chicken-Fil-A

For those of you who are not acquainted with my sister, you may not be familiar with the You Tube video that quote comes from.  I wish I could say the same.  About the You Tube, of course- most days I'm pretty over the moon that I know Jules.  That is neither here nor there...

This past Friday, my BFF's FH combined his love of all things free and his love of all things food into one perfectly amazing sitting.  After some hilarious email exchanges between his loving finacee and the Marketing Director of the local Chick-Fil-A, Brendan bravely signed up to participate in the Spicy Chicken Biscuit Eating context.

The task:  to down as many Spicy Chicken Biscuits as possible in 10 minutes
The prize:  free Chick-fil-a for a year (which in legalease translates to 1 meal a week for 52 weeks)
The competitor:  Kobayashi's little known Caucasian 5th cousin - Brendan "the Human Disposal" S.

Obviously Ryan and I had to go to cheerlead with Jen.  What choice do you have when a good friend takes on such a daunting task?  None is exactly the answer I arrived at as well.  So Jen, Ryan & I booked it to Chick-fil-a after work on Friday to watch people stuff themselves silly with what I believe was the bulk of the junior and senior classes of at least 2 neighboring highschools.

Brendan put down an impressive 4.5 SCB in his alloted 10 minutes.  While he did not win - he was a valiant competitor.  I would say we all walked out of there winners- Brendan achieved his free meal and the rest of us achieved a good laugh.  Atta boy B-Schams!

One of his competitors informed Brendan that he learned about the competition from a flier passed out in homeroom.  This appears to be a very successful marketing tactic.

Talking strategy.

Watching the first and second heats.  I believe this is after the 10 year old finished off his 3rd.  Sidenote:  Brendan did indeed sport a Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest shirt.

Action shot.

Still our favorite competitive eater.

It's a Love Story...

Hiiiiiii!  So, I went on hiatus for a while.  I apologize.  The logic behind that is three-fold:  1) I was working.  A lot.  2) I haven't taken ANY pictures.  3)  I was working. A lot.  So maybe my logic is two-fold.  (Math and I are not BFF.)

We will refer to this particular time period as my busy season intermission.  The 1st of my 3 busy season clients has filed.  I'm working on a new client for the next few weeks before my 3rd (and typically toughest) client begins.  In this interim time I feel it neccessary to pay appropriate homage to this time of year and the dude who makes it so sentimental for me.  As all who know me are well accustomed to- I'm not really a gusher.  I'm more likely to say something dismissive when someone pays Ryan a compliment and more likely to be making fun of him than singing his praises.  That is just how I am.  I've never been a fan of sap.  It makes me feel awkward and presumably makes you feel awkward as well.  So I'll try to put a little Amy-casm spin on it to avoid making you vom.

Feburary 2005
February is a special month for Ryan & I for a few reasons.  First, February was the month of our internship when we actually got to know eachother.  This was on a completely platonic level, of course, as we didn't start dating until much later.  However, it was at a time in my life when I had a lot of less than positive thoughts on men in general and had all but lost faith in them.  So it was truly refreshing to get to know him and enjoy some friendly banter now and then.

February 2007
Second, when you flash forward 2 years, February is the month that Ryan asked me out on our first date...unbeknownst to me.  (My intuition and utter clued-in-ness are second to none).  February 16, 2007 he talked me into going to Chuy's and then we went out with some friends afterwards.  We have been telephonically inseparable since.  Jen can attest to the fact that we were so busy texting for the remainder of the first 6 months that I walked into countless obstacles in the mall, at Target, in our apartment...  Is that not what love in the 21st century means?

February 2010
On February 27, 2010 Ryan made me the happiest girl in the entire universe.  He pulled off surprising me and proposing in front of the fam at the lake house.  Check out the wedding website for more deets.  Just thinking about that day makes my heart so incredibly full.  The most important elements of a proposal to me had always been being surprised and having family & friends involved... which he pulled off to perfection.

So, as you can see, February is a month that makes me feel pretty sappy.  It marks 6 years of knowing the man I now call my best friend, 4 blissul years of dating him and 1 year of being engaged and planning the day I've looked forward to my whole life.  I feel so very blessed to be marrying Ryan.  Even on the days when he can't remember to shut ANY drawer he opens or the days he crosses the sarcasm line so far that he can no longer see it- I wouldn't trade him for the world.  He makes me laugh harder than anyone else on the planet and I know that we will never live a boring day.  I trust his instinct and respect his intellect.  I adore that you get what you see.  He doesn't apologize for who he is- and he is that person every single day from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to bed.  He says what he thinks and he means what he says.  It's so nice to have those things to count on.

Thank you to my better half for making me as happy as he does and for standing by me even when I'm kind of a nutcase (like during busy season).  Thank you to all of the friends and family who love and support us individually and as a couple.  I hope that each of you had a wonderful Valentine's Day and have as many reasons to love the month of February (or some other month) as I do.  I also hope you don't think this means that you won't see any more posts of me making fun of the future hubs.  After all- I have to keep his ego in check.  ;c)

Nuptial News: Installment Eight

As cliche as it may sound, I can't believe we're only 5 months away.  I have allllll kinds of countdowns going on these days.  Days until busy season client #1 files: 5, Days until busy season client #3 files: 80(ish), Days until I'm eternally bonded to a man who thinks saying "m'lady" beforehand makes anything that comes out of his mouth polite: 150.  While I'm EXTREMELY excited about the first two, I'm hands-down most excited about the last.

Things Accomplished:
  • Floral/Decor BOOKED (BIG woohoo)
  • Hair/make up booked
  • A little website tweaking
  • A little registry tweaking
  • Made hotel reservations
  • Reserved hotel suite for getting ready with my hottie maids & other loved ones on the wedding day
  • Ordered bridesmaid shoes
  • Ordered coordinating ties for the dudes' tuxes
  • Ordered Guestbook
  • Ordered a little reception decor-related stuff
  • Ordered my jewelry/accessories
  • Ordered my shoes
Things in the Pipeline:
  • Invitations
  • BMaid Jewelry
Ryan's Contributions:
  • Rehearsal Dinner location officially booked
  • Picked out tuxes
  • May or may not have inappropriately addressed you as a "Mrs." when you are not married
I would like to thank everybody who is not me for all of your contributions to this shindig.  Mom, Jen, Julie, Ryan, Tiff - I couldn't do it without you.  I owe you all my first born.  You can armwrestle over him/her.

There's another man in my life...

and he goes by the name of "Busy Season."  Who would name their kid that, right?  Okay, so I jest but if you were to pay attention closely, several tell tale signs of adultry have crept back into my life.  Leaving for work before it's light out.  Returning from work late into the night.  A rapid decline in the number of texts/emails to my significant other.  No time for family, friends or social interests.  Multiple meals purchased for me.  Alas, for those of you who know me you recognize that it's just the way life goes between January and May for an auditor.

While, we're on the topic... what is this "auditing" that I speak of, you ask?  It sounds incredibly sexy.  (haaaaa.) Allow me to enlighten you.  It has nothing to do with taxes.  I do not even enjoy my own taxes.  I give up my life for a large chunk of the year so that my filing companies may include a 1 page "Report of Independent Registered Public Accounting firm" document evidencing our opinon on their financials.  I won't go into the specifics- (because you are likely at work and I've learned that the business world does not take kindly to sleeping under your desk) but essentially we help provide comfort over the numbers the investing world uses to decide what to do with their money.  Sexy is an understatement now that I think about it.

You know how I don't really believe in posts without pictures, but I work with what I've got at the moment... and I feel confident no one is interested in what my cube and/or portion of the conference table looks like.  So, I will share with everyone the things that I am thankful for during this time of the year.

  1. Starbucks.  It is no secret I am a fan of the bux.  However, during busy season it takes on a new meaning.  It becomes (to use a friend's wise words) "a shining beacon of hope."  There is nothing like a grande hazelnut OR caramel OR raspberry latte to cure the ills of an account that just won't reconcile.  (sidenote:  the skinny caramel macchiatos are delish)
  2. Godzilla.  Anyone who works with me knows the story of how Godzilla came to be.  He is my spaceheater.  Really "space" is a modest term... he will heat a whole freaking room, as most of my teams can attest to.  We have been through a lot together.  I would be dressed up in a puffy coat, earmuffs and gloves 24/7 without his love.  Not everyone is as fond of him as yours truly, but no one can deny that he is GOOD at his job.
  3. The Superficial.  Another thing that I love year round, but that puts a little more pep in my step during these times.  I get celeb news, pics and a laugh.  Best 3.5 mins of my 5 min lunch break every day.  Just when I think that my world will crumble because the "sum of" function has disappeared from my computer for the 7th time that day, I read about Amy Winehouse... and suddenly, my life doesn't seem so rough.
  4. The people who get to work even earlier than me.  They make the coffee.  Sometimes badly, but hey... you are my heroes nonetheless.
  5. Seasons on DVD.  DVR is just not enough.  It fills up far before I get around to getting caught up.  Don't worry though- in October I would love to discuss how amazing Modern Family is.  (I heart you, Phil Dunphy.)  And the latest guidette on Jersey Shore.
  6. Wrinkle Release.  The iron and I do not see eye to eye.  We have a long history of not getting along.  I have a scar on my right hand from our first nasty encounter and things really haven't improved much since.  Wrinkle release is kind of like my Prince Charming.  There are very few wrinkles that some wrinkle release and 10 minutes in the dryer can't overcome.
  7. Jello Mousse Cups (Chocolate or Mint).  They are delicious.  They are low calorie (to make room for all of the Take Out taxi).  They are breakfast.
Alright love muffins.  That concludes today's window into my life.  I would like to thank all of you who are understanding and who love and support me during this time of the year... I am so very blessed.

New Mama Juana, New Baby, New Year

In case you missed the memo- it is 2011.  With the New Year came a new... busy season.  Hence the reason I am just now getting around to posting about how I rung in 2011.  I am sure that everyone has been waiting with baited breath.

After our late night arrival back home from South Bend and our day of lighting up our lives... Ryan and I headed up to Lake Livingston to celebrate the New Year with: (1) Yanny, Mel & Jakey (pronounced YAWK-y by his papa), (2) Jendan and (3) Shaustin (I don't mash their names nearly enough on this blog- I apologize, readers) at Jonathan's mom's lake house.

Friday night, we all arrived... some of us bearing gifts including (but not limited to): break and bake cookies from the finest HEB in northeastern Houston's outskirts, homemade mama juana and homemade hand grenades.  If that's not a recipe for a good time, I don't know what is.

For those of you who are wondering how you've lived a life you previously considered full without knowing what mama juana is- allow me to enlighten you.  It is a beverage native to the Dominican Republic.  It is made of red wine, either whiskey or rum (sort of a choose your own adventure, if you will) and a variety of native barks.  It is every bit as disgusting as you are imagining.  And then some.  However, given that the audience involved was the Punta Cana crew, Austin took it upon himself to make his own in order to try to relive the magic.

Como se dice!

There is a story here that involves Jonathan being a subpar Rock-Paper-Scissors player and him nearly sharing a lake with some flamingos.  We'll save that one for when Jake is older and can appreciate it.

Jen and Brendan took a trip to NOLA over the holidays and brought back some hand grenade mix which they kindly shared with the crew.  In case you were worried we may not get the full experience- they did indeed drink think ahead and returned with enough authentic glasses for all parties involved.

Hand Grenade Champs

New Years Eve was spent much like our entire vacation in the Dominican Republic - with the girls hanging out and chatting completely unaware of what the boys were doing.  They were later found to be sitting around a fire in the yard errantly yelling.  Luckily this time there was no inflatable blob within a half mile radius.

The men made fire.  The ladies made glowstick hats.  Just another Friday night.

We celebrated the actual New Year like every other red-blooded American by watching the Times Square ball drop and exclaiming - "Wait, I thought Snooki was going to be in there?!"  After paying hommage to the JS kiddos by hottubing, we wrapped up the night playing a game called Smart @ss.  (Do I need to censor it if it's the acutal name of the game?)  Other than the fact that the boys were a lot better than us...it was a lot of fun.

One added bonus to NYE 2k11 is that it fell on a Friday which meant a whole extra 2 days of lounging and relaxing.  Jonathan and Melanie were generous enough to host us all for the whole weekend.  Everyone spent the remainder of the weekend ignoring our New Years resolutions, stuffing our faces with fajitas, hotdogs, hamburgers, playing with adorable baby Jake and watching enough football for the next year.

Already a good man: dominating a recliner, taking a snooze and watching football all at the same time.

Happy, happy new year, dollfaces.
