Happily Ever After: The Hershberger Edition

On May 19th my cousin Travis made the best decision of his life and married his long-time girlfriend Miranda.  Not only did this mean adding another member to the Brady Bunch with the best birthday ever (October 4th), but it also meant another opportunity for the Boarman family to take South Bend by storm.  On Thursday May 17th we all met up at the airport after work and caught a flight to Chicago.

We arrived in Chicago around 10 or so which, as anyone familiar with Boarman family travel can attest, is when the fun really began.  The 7 of us rented 2 cars for the road trip over to South Bend.  After about 30 minutes of close inspection of said cars under the highest powered street lamps we could find and a near paper-rock-scissors match to determine who would be in which cars- we set out for our first destination - McDonald's.  We decided that coffee was much needed and set our sights on a Mickey D's that was within a quarter of a mile from the rental car lot.  Unfortunately proximity does NOT make it any easier to remember if you took 3 lefts, 3 rights or some combination thereof.  No names will be used in order to protect the innocent but I can confirm that it took about 60% of us to determine how to safely guide ourselves to the golden arches.

After some coffee and about half of the items on the $1 menu for a caravaner who shall remain nameless (their name might rhyme with Smyan though), the remainder of the ride was fairly uneventful.  That is until the coffee made it's way through our system and we needed to stop at a gas station to relieve ourselves about 30 minutes from South Bend.  Much like our instinct in Christmas Tree selection, our gut feeling about gas station selection is not to be trusted.  Our first clue that the occasion would go badly should have been the fact that the attendant was standing outside smoking.  The second clue probably should have been that the key to the bathroom was attached to a night stick that looked like it moonlights at a Gentleman's Club.  The encounter ended with Ryan literally having to place his foot onto the door of the restroom as leverage to remove said night stick.  He then proceeded to chase my Mom with it around the parking lot.  Because that is how we mature folk roll.

Thankfully despite both incidents, we arrived safely in South Bend at Grandpa's house around 1 am.  Sure we had the giggles and needed to sanitize our whole bodies- but the important part is that we made it, right?  After about 30 minutes of chatting, we all hit the hay.

Friday during the day we had some free time before the rehearsal dinner.  The "child" faction of our group decided to head over to Notre Dame to show David around since he hadn't been before.  It happened to be graduation weekend AND a beautiful day so there was lots of activity on campus.  We all enjoyed walking around pretending to be undergrads while inevitably the real undergrads probably wondered in their heads who those 4 old people were there to watch graduate.  As always, the grounds were stunning.

Statue at the entrance to campus that I've seen probably 5 times.  If you think that means I remember who it is, you're definitely wrong.  Maybe the 6th time will be the charm?

I just liked this building, so you get to look at it too.

Matt, David & Julie making that priest look GOOD.

Gilded dome of the Administration building amidst some foliage.  Because I'm so artsy.

The inside of Sacred Heart.  As you recall from my Europe vacay pics, I looooove myself some arched ceilings.  I should pintrest it.

Side entrance to Sacred Heart.  Ryan & I look like giants here.

Duck, duck, goose.

Touch down Jesus doing his thang.

As soon as we got home from our Notre Dame adventures we gussied ourselves up to head to the rehearsal dinner.  It was held at an adorable Italian Restaurant that I can't remember the name of which is likely a testament to the quality of their wine.  We dined on a fabulous meal of penne pasta, lasagne, fried chicken and spaghetti & meatballs.  With bellies that full, it's impossible not to leave happy.  We had a wonderful time discussing the finer points of my education (or lack thereof) in the French language, the differences in where your money is spent pre- vs post-marriage and other exciting life lessons.

Jimmy James & Caddy looking like porch rocker models.

Matty & my ever-handsome Grandpa.

Drink ticket enthusiasts.  Apparently I missed the blue memo?

Julie, Laura, Matt, Aunt Jan & Matt.  No doubt crucial nuggets of wisdom were exchanged right before I took this photo.

Ryan with the groom.  The fact that Travis is throwing up the peace sign makes me think Ryan's advice was to run.

October 4th's finest specimens - Miranda/Randy/Dita & I.

On May 19th we lounged around in the morning and played some epic games of Euchre and Skipbo.  After dominating at them all (editors note: I really don't remember who won, but since I write this blog we'll pretend I did)- we once again got ourselves dolled up to do some celebrating.

The wedding was at an adorably picturesque church that looked straight out of a movie.  The ceremony was, of course, beautiful.  Afterwards we headed over to the 4-H fairgrounds for the reception which was outdoors in a tent.  Growing up we used to visit South Bend each summer and we always hoped that our visit would coincide with 4-H fair time because we loved to watch Kara and Travis compete.  It was cool to get to go back and the tent and surroundings were perfect.

We spent the reception dancing, laughing, eating, laughing, singing, dancing some more and just generally having the time of our lives.  As I'm sure the pictures below will demonstrate, the Brady portion of the family knows how to have a good time.  Just to give you an idea, the night ended with all of us at Steak & Shake next to a group who had just come from prom.  Fanciest night that Steak & Shake has probably ever seen.

Thank you for inviting us Trav & Miranda - we love you both so much!  Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Hershberger.

If ever you need to film a movie with a church- this is in South Bend.  Book it.

Caddy & JJ modeling a different variety of seat-ware.

Ryan & I looking a little windblown.  I travel with a wind machine now.  No big deal.

Just as delicious as it was pretty.

I need to get Shawna to teach me how to take better full room type shots.  Trust me, my photography skills don't do this set-up justice.

The fun table - with 2 Amys & 2 Matts, how could it not be?

Mamacita & her daddio.

Sista, siiiiiistaaaaaa.

The happy couple.

Miranda, Caddy, Me & Grandpa with a side of sun-flare.

Ava's 3rd flower girl performance in under a year.  She should teach a class.  I have a feeling the first lesson would be to remember to request "All the Single Ladies" as soon as you hit the reception.  If at first you don't succeed, ask, ask again.

Julie  & my pretty cousins Kara & Ashleigh.

Manly men.  It's a toss up whether they're discussing Fantasy Baseball or America's Got Talent.

Ava showing Shiloh how it's done.

I'm going to guess that Shiloh also likes "All the Single Ladies".  That's the only thing I can think of that would elicit this level of excitement.

My cousin Kyle looks fab in ladies shades, doesn't he?

At some point Amy R. convinced Trav to switch shoes with her.  I can't say I've ever seen a socked foot look better in a flip flop.

Obviously the DJ has not seen Ryan karaoke or he'd never have relinquished the mic to him.  Thankfully Gina, Matt & Micky appear to be doing the bulk of the signing.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume this is an 80s song.  Although given David's history, it could also be "I'm on a Boat."

Ryan & the mother of the groom.  Look out Aunt Jan - someone may have a crush.  I don't think he even danced that enthusiastically at our wedding.

Aunt Jean & her boyfriend John.

Patty & my Mom sharing a moment.  This looks like a good one to end on doesn't it?  A happy Steak & Shake to all and to all a good night!

The One

I'm currently about 6 posts or so behind.  I meant to get them knocked out rapid-fire after I finished posting about McMartin family vacation so that I could pat myself on the back for being caught up for once.  Unfortunately I only got one post typed and ready to go before our family suffered a cripplingly heart-breaking loss last Wednesday.  It's been on my heart and mind since and I quite frankly haven't felt like writing.  I debated posting about it now, but I decided to continue posting in chronological order.  That way hopefully by the time I'm caught up I'll have collected my thoughts and some semblance of the appropriate words.  In the meantime, if you're the praying type, prayers for my family's strength and peace would be most appreciated.  I apologize for the divergence from my typical anti-serious story telling style, but it warranted explanation.  And now back to your regularly scheduled program...

Apparently only fabulous creatures make their world debut in the middle of May because on May 16th, the Wednesday after I went to Dallas to celebrate Melissa's birthday, we celebrated Princess Whiskerface's 1st birthday.  Granted she's a dog, so "celebrated" is a loose term.

I'm not totally sure how you are supposed to mark a dog's first birthday.  I am pretty sure googling that would only result in me questioning people's sanity and/or wondering why they don't have more hobbies.  In lieu of doing so,  Ryan & I decided that giving her a really nice dog bone and some scraps from the steaks we had for dinner that evening should suffice.  I may have also decided that an iPhone photo shoot was in order.  (Hey, I am a Mom after all.)  Upon reviewing said photoshoot, I should have considered changing out of my workout clothes, but hindsight is 20/20, right?

While she remained pretty mum on the topic when asked, I think she enjoyed it.  Who wouldn't want to eat some steak and hang out with Ryan & I?!  Now that she's 1 am I expected to stop devoting entire posts to her?  I can't promise you people anything but I will do my best.  :c)

Happy Birthday to the Lola Lane!

Mom.  You're sweaty so I'm realllly not sure why you think getting this close is acceptable.  Can we wrap this up?

Is 1 the age that she'll stop sleeping like a contortionist?  Appears not.

What, no one in your household cradles their 100 pound beast like a newborn?  Well aren't you odd.

Typically in the mornings I open the back door and let Lola out to do her thang while I make coffee.  Usually after she feels accomplished by chasing any squirrels in the yard and sniffing the entire premises to make sure she hasn't missed anything, she lets herself back in the house.  One morning she was taking much longer than usual and I poked my head outside to find her sunbathing.   A very proud mother moment indeed.

1 is also not the age that she stops pouting when no one is looking at, talking to or petting her.  Do you see how pitiful she can make herself look?!   "Gosh I wish someone loved me..."

Why yes, that is half a sleeping mastiff under my bed.

Lola gets so excited when Ryan gets home from working a night that she literally leaps into his lap.  He's well-prepared for a future in Mall Santa-ing.

Person:Popcorn at a movie as Dog:Nyla-bone while watching squirrels out the window.  I found this while locking up one morning before leaving for work.

Happy Birthday to ME.

Melissa's Birthday

Two weekends after we arrived home from our stellar vacation, I finally got over my mourning period and decided to venture to the Big D (and I DO mean Dallas) for my dear former roomie, Melissa's, birthday on May 12th.  My more American Idol-obssessed half had to work and thus I was YOYO (you're on your own- shout out to you Court) for this little road trip.  When you have the Dirty Dancing CD though you're never really alone, are you?  I have to admit that it was nice to do a little travelling that did not require the use of a passport and/or waging war over a cramped airplane arm rest with a male.

First, a little diatribe on my love for Melissa.  My 5th year of school she was 1 of my 2 incredible roommates.  As you have likely read on here before- when we graduated we all moved to different cities.  Courtney to the Big Apple, Melissa to Big & Rich Dallas and your's truly to the home of SPM (you know my name).  Melissa & I spent almost every waking moment of our last semester in school together because we shared a bathroom, took all the same classes, participated in the same CPA study program and took our CPA exams at the same time.

Sometimes we shared a little too much.  For instance there was the great SS incident of 2k6 as well as a time when Melissa shared a little bit too much about her workaround methodology for when one of our shared appliances was out of commission.  Yet somehow, I still adore her.  Some might say that it's our mutual love of sushi, coffee, and a good banter sesh that keeps us bonded.  I, however, attribute it solely to the fact that we both have a deep affection for Huang and terribly delivered lines from Ice on Law & Order SVU.  When you share such deep rooted beliefs in life as sentiments regarding TV characters, how could the relationship not be eternal?!

Enough love session, hmmm?  We don't need anyone's head get any bigger.  Somehow each year for Melissa's birthday I am travelling.  I don't know why or how that happens- it's clearly one of the seven wonders of the world.  This year though I was not and I seized the opportunity to visit for Melissa's birthday which happened to double as a house warming for the new house she and Blake bought when they got married.  Melissa's sweet husband toiled over 94 pounds of crawfish while the rest of us milled about and enjoyed telling old ridiculous stories and creating new ones.

Melissa and Blake have an absolutely incredible group of family and friends.  It was a very productive day for yours truly as I: 1) learned what you do when you're retired from Scotty P (it sounds a lot like college to me), 2) was introduced to boiled garlic AND pop chips- life changing, 3) planned a future best-seller with Melissa's friend Stevie, 4) tried to help Katie plan an escape route from Mexico and 5) was witness to the greated Whitney dance tribute ever performed by Lauren.  Not too shabby for an evening's work, right?

Obviously I was very busy being productive and took no photos.  The good news is that I have pleeeenty of stock photos of Melissa to include here.  No picture-less posts todaaaaay!  Thank you to the Covingtons for inviting me, feeding me and housing me.  You're lucky I ever decided to leave.  Thank you to all of Melissa & Blake's friends and family for being so much fun.  Happy Birthday Mopelia!

It's getting in huuuuuuuur.

If you must cook, you should look good doing it.

Little wifely love.  Melissa, Cinnamon disappeared while you were shopping for that belt.

Literally the night before we took FAR.  At least if the whole CPA thing hadn't worked out she could be a Where's Waldo aerobics instructor.

Did I remember to turn my chi off?

Is that a martini strainer or are you just happy to see me?

Ohhh, the great layering debacle of 2k6.

Whipped it good.
