Home Sweet Home Reno: Month Six

February 21st marked one more month of red X's on the home reno-er calendar I have proudly displayed on my desk in my heart.  I would classify this as the month that was particularly full of hiccups and unexpected events.

In order to get us caught up, I might make these next couple of months worth of posts a little lighter on verbiage than previous ones in this category.  Let's take a walk down iPhone memory lane and try to piece it together, shall we?

Accomplishments:

  • Moved out of our old house
  • Cleaned out the attic space above the garage
  • Insulation in attic space above master bath installed
  • Electrical rough ins completed
  • Fireplace brick cleaned
  • Fireplace hearth re-installation started
  • Living room window re-framed
  • Living room window re-insulated
  • Window pop out in master re-framed
  • Window pop out in master re-insulated
  • Drip pan under hot water heater added (didn't exist before)
  • Solicited 3 quotes for siding replacement
  • Selected a siding contractor

Purchases:

  • A lot of lumber
  • A lot of insulation
  • New electrical panel
  • Can't remember but knowing me- more paint samples

In the Pipeline:

  • Finishing up the fireplace
  • Re-working the built ins in the living room
  • A lot of other stuff

So I've never been in it, but apparently the attic space above our garage had a lot of what my Dad refers to as "trappings."  I think in layman's terms that means junk.  This was the haul from the day he cleaned it out.

This is part of the space those trappings were previously occupying.

Let there be (can) light!  This is the kitchen.  Can't you tell?!

Fireplace: take 2.  I have absolutely zero idea what product they used to clean this brick but it now looks AMAZING.  You would never be able to tell there was sheet rock and nails covering it up for nearly 30 years.

One day while at work I received a picture of just a large hole in the wall where the window was.  I told our GC it was a little more open concept than I had envisioned.  While re-doing the fireplace, dry rot was found under this window (because our siding was bad).  Exciting surprise numero uno!  So GC re-framed it.

Playing pretend with the sconces for the girls' bathrooms.

GC made another floor outlet in the study.  This was apparently the month of electrical.

Our electrical panel had to be replaced.  Exciting surprise numero dos!

And thiiiiis was the biggest exciting (sarcasm font) surprise- numero tres.  I don't have any before pictures on me at the moment, but this is the outside of the master.  On the inside there was a bench with built in storage.  We knew when we purchased it that it needed to be tended to because the sprinklers + bad siding = big mess and water getting into the storage area.  In doing so we wound up nixing the storage bench and deciding to make the bump out just a little more floor space (like 1 foot).  Then we realized there was no foundation below it.  So the boys spent a weekend pouring a new foundation and completely re-framing the space.  It now looks awesome and their hard work totally paid off.

View from the inside.  Looking gooooood.

Insulated, finished product.

GC dry laid the brick pattern first to be sure he was happy with it.  If you look back at old pics, you'll see he decided to change it up a bit.  Super pumped to show you finished product pics in the next month's update because he made it beautiful!

  1. The sweater tied around the shoulders really aids with the sconce fitting. Pumped to see more reveals!!!
