I see London...

What do:
  • 5 Days,
  • 4 Airports,
  • 3 Countries (& languages & modes of transport),
  • 2 Novels, and
  • 1 Curry experience
equal?  Last week.

From February 12th - 17th, I had the good fortune of getting to travel to London & Pori, Finland with my awesome boss.  Have I mentioned lately that I adore my job?  We were only in London for a little over 24 hours, but upon reviewing my photo stock, that is more than enough to devote an entire post to.

We left H-town mid afternoon on Sunday which put us into London bright and early somewhere in the ballpark of 6 am.  There is obviously no rest for the weary... or for the Finance Department because we collected our belongings and headed straight to the office with only a minor detour to drop off our bags at the hotel.  (I'd like to take a brief moment to point out that the last time I went to London I was in 11th grade, and we were in this same sleep-less situation.  Back then, rather than doing anything productive, I chose to sleep on top of my luggage no so discreetly in the middle of a hotel lobby.  So see Mom, maybe I am growing up after all!)

We spent the day putting faces to email addressses, straightening out some reporting issues and getting the grand tour of the office.  Those things are no fun to read about though, are they?  So we'll skip ahead to the evening.

Simon and Steve, 2 wonderful Genesis Finance folks, were kind enough to devote their evening to showing us a good time in the city.  This was particularly sweet of them because Simon has a 2 HOUR commute home each day.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Steve lives in Liverpool and gets a hotel in the city during the week.  Next time you find yourself with traffic, keep these gentlemen in mind... it could clearly be much worse.  I also recommend the Dirty Dancing soundtrack in such cases - it's a feel good time.

So, back to our evening...first our tour guides took us over to Covent Gardens to grab a beer.  Per Simon & Steve, Covent Gardens used to be a fruit market in the days of yore.  We got to walk rather than having to take any public transportation, which I thought was such a treat.  One thing I love about Europe as opposed to the US is the amount of walking that you can do.  More walking = more expendable calories for the impotant things in life... like frappuchinos.

We grabbed a beer at Punch & Judy's, a cute little pub overlooking the center strip of Covent Gardens.  The pictures I took of the inside don't really do it justice.  We found ourselves in the basement, which was exactly how I envision a true British pub to be- low ceilings, brick walls and a huge bar.  Our hosts made sure that our experience was authentic by ordering us real English beer.  It was served slightly below room temperature, which was perfect for a chilly winter day.  Over our brews we discussed the Queens Jubilee and the Olympics.  London is definitely the place to be this summer!

After we downed our beer, we set off in search of dinner.  Simon told us that we absolutely could not get a more English experience than by going to "have a curry," and who are we to spoil legitimacy?  I have to admit that I was a little weary of this choice because I've only had Indian food on 2 occasions in my life and I wasn't a huge fan.  The place completely won me over.  The food was delicious and the company was second to none.  We discussed gun laws, fishing and racing.  If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought I was back in Texas... with more sophisticated accents.

Post dinner, our kind guides dropped us off at our hotel and we finally called it a day- which was a good thing because I think that the energy pills Marina supplied me with wore off about 30 minutes before that.  Overall it was an amazing experience and I can't say enough about the company or our tour guides.  A heartfelt thank you to all of them!

Stay tuned for the Finland leg of our trip...

This was not our taxi, but that did not stop Marina from taking a picture of it.

Chancery Court Hotel- so pretty.  It was built sometime between when America was born and when I was born.  I've never been good at guessing these kinds of things but I believe our friend Peter, the bellhop, told us sometime in the early 1900s.

My awesome room.

Marina, Ilhan & I in the lobby.  Those flowers are real.  I touched them.

The 3 of us in the courtyard headed to work: from angle 1.

The 3 of us in the courtyard headed to work: angle 3.  I have skipped angle 2 and about 3 alternate shots.  We had a real photo shoot going.

Were you wondering who was taking all these?  Our wonderful bellhop, Peter, obviously.

Marina's creative director skills parallel Jen's.  Did you think the photoshoot might end just because we reached the lobby of the office?

We are supposed to be demonstrating how small the room is.  I don't think we accomplished that mission.  Yes, we are definitely taking pictures during work.

Simon & I before we headed to Covent Gardens.

First stop on the tour o'fun: Covent Gardens.  This used to be the fruit market back in the day, but has since become a cool outdoor-ish mall type place with pubs and shops.  Clothing & Beer > fruit.

Punch & Judy's.  Charming folks, aren't they?

Vanna White has nothing on Marina.  Working that sign.

Simon insisted that we get authentic English beer.  I can't recall the name of it because he ordered, but I actually liked it.

The next stop on the tour o'fun was a curry place.  Simon informed us that to be a true English Curry experience we should have been out at the bars until 2 am and wandered in here afterwards.  From that I took away that Taco C is to Americans as Curry is to Brits.  I think they win.

Cheers.  Please pardon my appearance.  I believe at this point I'd more or less been awake for more than 30 hours.  Not as easy as it was in college.

Woohoo for Team Offshore!

Growing Bean

Once again, I'm a terrible mother.  I've neglected to share pictures of my bebe with the world for a few months.  So today I will rectify that by doing a photo dump off my iPhone from the past few months.  I know, I know - I've made your day.  Feel free to thank me via lavish gifts.

There's really not much new to share- she continues to grow like a weed.  I'm not sure how much she weighs now but considering Ryan tried to do a clean with her the other day and was unsuccessful for the first time... I'd put her in the 90 pound range.  No one has told her that though, as you'll see from the pictures below.

Without further adieu, I give you the growing bean...

P.S. I just got home from London & Finland for work.  Look forward to those upcoming posts.  They involve tales of travel woe and some awesome safety glasses.

What?  You want to look at pictures of me? (She does have a left ear... don't worry.  She's just verrrrry flexible in the ear department).

*sigh* These people exhaust me.

I believe this is what the biology books call a symbiotic relationship.

As Lola has grown she's decided the couch isn't just for people.  She does this very regularly.

People ask me often if Lola sleeps with us.  This is precisely why she does not.  Where would I sleep?

She wants to grow up to be either a gymnast or a contortionist.

Chip off the tall block.  She's not even sitting up straight here.

So angelic that you'd never believe this face destroyed her bed a week ago.  (Don't remind Ryan though).

This is new.  She literally will crawl into our laps.  I've really got to talk to her about sitting more lady-like.

Bonus video.  If you teach your dog to love hoses, bathing them is never an issue.

February 16th...

... 2007 I went to dinner with a friend.  Five years later I am married to him.

The only photo from our first date.  Note from my facial expression that I've been skeptical of anything Ryan says from day 1.

As I outlined last year around this time, February is a month that tends to cause a lot of reflection for me... typically of the sappy variety.  Not because of Valentines Day, but because it's been such a central month in Ryan and I's relationship.

I don't want to bore you all with any more mushy details of my sentimentality than neccessary.  So I'll suffice it to say that I am outrageously thankful for the fact that I agreed to go to Chuy's with a friend and Ryan had the cahones to mention that he was interested.  Apparently the creamy jalapeno dip truly is life-changing.

I love you, Big Daddy Long Legs!  Thank you.

P.S. This does not give you a pass for the house to be a wreck when I get home tomorrow.  SMOOCHES!

Clearly it was love at first sight.

New York, New York.

That looks about right.

This is how you train 'em.

Ohhhh fanny pack bet.

He's just the cutest.

Suuuuch a romantic.

Pictures are serious business.

Girls Just Wanna Have Roadtrips...

Two of my Mom's close friends were also smiled upon by the childbirth gods and blessed with multiple daughters.*  The 3 of them meet up regularly for dinner and it recently occurred to them that they could amplify the amount of gossip, wine and laughs shared at such gatherings if we all joined forces.  Obviously a Mother/Daughter outting was in order.  On January 28th, Julie, Mom & I hit the road to make this dream a reality.  Destination: where other than beautiful Austin, TX?

We arrived in the afternoon and got right down to business - wine, crackers and cheese in our hotel room.  It was great to get to catch up with everyone as I hadn't seen my Mom's friends since the wedding and I hadn't seen 3 of the 4 other daughter participants since I babysat them when I was in junior high.  They turned out to be pretty awesome young ladies... which is no doubt attributable to my excellent care**.  (Which I owe wholly to a voracious appetite for reading the Babysitters Club.  Kristy, why were you always so bossy?!)

After a solid gab session we headed downtown to grab dinner.  We wound up eating at a new bar on 6th called Old School.  It won me over, which was a feat considering I was a little skeptical given it's location next to the Aquarium.  Post dinner we headed over to Esther's Follies - a Boarman family favorite.  It's a topical comedy show that I highly recommend if you ever find yourself in Austin with no plans for the evening.  Per usual, Caddy laughed the entire show as if Owen Wilson himself was performing.  It was excellent.

Following the Follies, the daughters hit the town and the mamacitas headed back to the hotel.  We spent most of the evening at Kung Fu essentially playing the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon Cy Springs.  Eventually Julie and I headed to Speakeasy to meet up with Julie's good friend Morgan.

The next morning we all had brunch together at the hotel and then parted ways.  Overall it was a great time and I look forward to doing it again.  Thank you mucho to the organizers and brain children of this operation - our wonderful Mothers.  We love you!

Christine and her mama, Mrs. Lucht.  We missed her sister, Patty, who was busy playing baby shower hostess.

Lindsay, Aimee, Mrs. Howarth & Kristen.  Can't you tell they had excellent babysitters as children?

JuJuBee, Me & Mamacita.

Typical.  Rachel, we missed you!

Partners in chair-thieving crime.

My favorite giants.

* I feel confident making this dig because I do not believe that my extensive readership (I believe there are 3 of you) includes any males.

Another Year of TiffyPants!

On January 28th, my favorite sister-in-law turned one year wiser.  Since I was out of town on her actual birthday, she was kind enough to move the celebration to January 27th.  At the birthday princess' request we kicked the celebration off at Lupe's.  Female handbook rule #9: margaritas, fajitas and salsa are quintessential ingredients for all celebratory occassions.

After stuffing ourselves silly, there was obviously no choice left but to work those calories off in the form of dancing so we headed to Wild West.  I hadn't been in a while (read: 2 years) and let me just tell you that the people watching has improved even over what I remembered.  If you've ever found yourself up late at night wondering if Grandparents still go out and dance or if there's anywhere you might see a full on hipster doing a line dance - I can tell you with certainty after January 27th that the answer to both of these questions is YES.  You can thank me later for the sleep you'll be getting tonight.

We had a great time people watching, cupid shuffling, watching a patented Dena/Tiffany photoshoot and celebrating the sis.  Happy Birthday Tiff- I look forward to another year of watching bad TV, Christmas socks and mocking Ryan!

Beer or marg... Why choose?

Ryan's just one of the girls.  Until it comes time to box up leftovers... then still very much a dude.

Aren't they just the cutest?

Birthday staring contest.

Brianna and Shawna.

Dena handling some very important business.

Testing the staying power of my shampoo while Julie & David take a cute photo.  Typical.

Happy Birthday, Pants!
